RWD was popular early in rally just because it was simpler tech, and before the FWD really became capable of holding down the power, AWD was already on the scene.

You won't oversteer under power with a front wheel drive car, so you possibly find it easier (and thus more fun) to drive. Rear wheel drive cars are the hardest to control on dirt roads as they have a huge tendancy to oversteer when you accelerate; but in a lot of ways they usually are the most rewarding to master.
